Woman recovers leg prosthesis carried by the sea: The incredible discovery after 10 months

A woman whose new prosthetic leg was washed away by the sea was “extremely happy” to find it 10 months later, returned to the same beach where she lost it.

Last April, Brenda Ogden, 69, lost her blade-style titanium prosthetic leg just before swimming in the North Sea.

He was posing for a photo with a swimming group of which he was a member when a huge wave knocked them all over and carried his titanium prosthesis out to sea.

Ogden had suffered the amputation of his leg below the knee five years earlier, after a terrible car accident. The retired nurse shared that she waited more than a year to get the fake leg, and had only had the prosthetic for a week before the beach incident.

“The prosthesis was specially designed to facilitate my access to water,” Ogden told the South West England News Service. “I had never swum in the sea before and it was on my bucket list to do so.”

The prosthesis cost him more than $2,000, and his swimming group banded together to search for it. However, a daylong sand search produced no results, and Ogden returned home heartbroken.

She had been an avid runner and began considering swimming as a way to resume physical activity after the accident. “I depended on the leg to be able to do water sports,” he said, adding that he “abandoned” the idea after the loss.

Ten months later, Elizabeth Forbes, 38, was walking along a beach in Hornsea, East Yorkshire, looking for fossils. Something caught his attention; not a fossil, but what he thought might be a gas cylinder.

“I saw a strange and unusual shape out of the corner of my eye as I was walking,” Forbes said. “I was curious to know what it was, so I went closer and there it was, stuck on top of some fallen rocks.”

He then posted a photo of his strange find to a Facebook group called Fossils of the Holderness Coast, where it was identified as Brenda’s. Forbes originally left the leg where he found it, but returned around noon the next day, hoping to return it to Brenda sometime soon.

“I have a feeling that Brenda thought she might never see the leg again, so she was excited to have found it for her and to be able to return it to her,” she said.

Ogden described herself as “extremely happy” after learning she had been found.

“I have spent the last few months grieving the loss as I had literally lost a part of me,” he described. “I had accepted that I might never see her again, but the fact that she has been found is just brilliant. Thank God for Lizzie.

“I’m happy to be able to try swimming again.”
