Can a telephone line be disconnected from the CURP in Mexico? This is what you should know

On January 9, the mandatory period for telephone line users to register their cell phone number with their CURP or an official identification began in Mexico, with the aim of avoiding blocking or indefinite suspension of the service.

However, the measure has generated controversy and concern among millions of users, to the extent that many are already wondering if it is possible to unlink their telephone line from the registry once registered. If you are one of them, here we explain what the law says and how the process works.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO UNLINK A PHONE LINE FROM THE REGISTRATION?

The answer is yes.
In accordance with what is established in the Official Gazette of the Federation, telephone lines can be legally and technically separated from their owner or user, canceling the association between personal identity and the telephone number.

This procedure is completely legal, free and regulated, and can be carried out under certain assumptions.

TYPES OF UNLINKING A TELEPHONE LINE

There are two types of unlinking, depending on the relationship you have with the number:

Holder or legal owner of the line

  • The line is disabled.
  • No calls or messages can be made or received.
  • Only emergency numbers will remain active.
  • There is no possibility of subsequent reactivation.

User (who uses the telephone, but is not the owner or pays for the line)

  • The registered user’s name is removed.
  • The number remains active under the legal owner.
  • Ideal for borrowed, corporate or family lines.

WHAT DOCUMENTS DO YOU NEED FOR DISLINCATION?

To carry out the procedure you must have one of the following official documents:

  • current INE
  • CURP
  • Passport

In the event that the termination is due to the death of the owner or user, it will be necessary to present the death certificate, and the procedure must be carried out in person.

HOW TO UNLINK A PHONE LINE?

The process is free and can be done in two ways: in person or remotely.

IN-PERSON DISMISSAL PROCESS

  1. Go to a Customer Service Center of your telephone company.
  2. Present your current official identification for identity validation.
  3. Once the procedure is completed, the provider must give you a sheet of paper with a unique identifier, which includes the date and time of the operation.

With this, the line will be officially disconnected from the system.

REMOTE UNLINKING PROCESS

For this modality you must enter the official website of your telephone company. Although the steps may vary by provider, the procedure generally includes:

  1. Perform a “Proof of Life”, taking a photograph to verify identity.
  2. Expressly state the intention to disconnect the telephone line.
  3. The system allows up to three attempts to complete the process.
  4. If this is not achieved, it will be necessary to contact the customer service area.
  5. Confirmation of unlinking will be sent via message.

IS IT ADVISABLE TO UNLINK YOUR LINE?

Unlinking can be useful in cases of user change, loss of number, legacy lines or corporate phones, but it is important to consider that, if you are the legal owner, the number will become unusable.

Before starting the process, review your situation carefully and make sure you choose the correct type of separation.
