Google Pixel 9 adds support for AirDrop: Send files to Apple devices easily

In November 2025, Google managed to surprise the technological world by making possible what seemed unthinkable: the transfer of files via AirDrop from Android devices, without the direct collaboration of Apple.

Initially, this feature was restricted to only Google Pixel 10 devices, but is now expanding to include Google Pixel 9 models as well.

The previous generation, which includes the Google Pixel 9, 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL models, is already receiving the ability to send files via AirDrop to Apple devices in its stable versions of Android.

AirDrop functionality comes to previous Pixels

According to reports Android Authorityciting several Reddit users, they have been able to use this new feature on their Pixel 9 devices. An example is the user Individual_Isopod417who consulted about this feature in the subreddit by Pixel.

In this discussion, opinions are varied. Several users confirmed that they gained this capability by updating to the latest version of Google Play Services through their device settings.

Screenshots from some users show that devices in these series can now use AirDrop without any issues. Remember that, at its launch, this feature was only available for the Pixel 10.

It seems that the expansion of this function is being carried out gradually and by specific regions. We have tested with a Google Pixel 9 and a Google Pixel 9 Pro XL, but we have not been able to send files via AirDrop to a Mac Mini M4.

It was also not possible to transfer files from the Mac to these devices. The subforum shows a lot of varied comments, some confirming that it worked, while others were unsuccessful.

It is reasonable to think that, given this increase in support, the extension of this capacity will be done gradually, probably starting with English-speaking territories or the United States, with hopes that it will eventually reach Spain.

An effective way to check if your Google Pixel 9 can now send files via AirDrop is to update Google Play Services from the settings and check the ‘System Updates’ section, within the ‘System’ menu.

Additionally, it is recommended to activate QuickShare from Google services. This can be done by accessing the user profile in the settings and looking for the ‘QuickShare’ option. Both AirDrop and QuickShare must be enabled to send files to nearby devices.
