Will you be left without WhatsApp? What will happen to your account if you do not register your line before June 30

Time is running out. In Mexico, mandatory registration to link telephone lines with the CURP is already a reality, and the deadline of June 30, 2026 has millions of users with a shared doubt: Will this measure affect my WhatsApp account?

Here we explain what the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) says and how it will impact your applications.

THE REAL RISK: WILL WHATSAPP STOP WORKING?

To this day, WhatsApp operates independently and can be used over Wi-Fi even without active cellular service. However, this could change drastically.

In interview with MillenniumAbán Román, general director of Planning at the CRT, revealed that a new regulation is being analyzed in conjunction with META. The goal is for every person with a WhatsApp account to have a chip registered in their name.

“We are analyzing that WhatsApp does not allow the use of its platform to those who do not have an associated and registered chip,” said the manager.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON’T REGISTER YOUR LINE BEFORE THE DEADLINE?

If July 1 arrives and you have not complied with the link, your line will suffer severe restrictions from your operator:

• Suspension of services: You will not be able to make calls or send text messages (SMS).
• Mobile data cut: You will be left without internet outside the home; Your company’s network will stop working.
• Limited use: Your phone will only be used for emergency calls or contact with the operator.

And WhatsApp? You will be able to continue using it exclusively with Wi-Fi while the new regulation with META takes shape. Once the agreement is signed, if your line is not registered, you could lose full access to the messaging app.

IS IT A BIOMETRIC PATTERN? CLARIFY DOUBTS ABOUT YOUR DATA

One of the biggest fears is the delivery of fingerprints or sensitive data. The CRT has been emphatic: it is not a permanent biometric registry. For registration you will only be required to:

1. Full name.
2. CURP or official identification.
3. Proof of life: A brief facial movement in front of the camera to validate identity.

Important: The system only compares your face with the ID to verify that it is you, and according to CRT, this facial data is deleted immediately, not stored in a database.

WHY IS REGISTRATION MANDATORY?

The measure seeks to stop crimes such as extortion and virtual kidnapping. Currently, the CRT estimates that 85% of the 158 million mobile lines in the country are anonymous, which facilitates the use of “disposable chips” for illicit activities.
